SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — As the community continues to recover from the deadly shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego, court documents are raising questions about whether warning signs were missed before the attack.
Records filed by Chula Vista police in January 2025 show officers sought a gun violence restraining order against Marco Vazquez, the father of 18-year-old Caleb Vazquez, one of the two gunmen accused in the attack that killed three men at the mosque.
In the emergency order, police outlined concerns about Caleb Vazquez’s behavior, including allegations that he idolized Nazis and mass shootings. The documents also stated that he had previously been placed on a 5150 psychiatric hold, which allows for involuntary mental health detention in California.
