Some heavy rain, storms possible later today

Muggy, damp conditions will be with us for one more day before it starts to clear up on Thursday behind a cold front. That front is dropping into the region this morning from the north, sparking scattered showers and a few thunderstorms, with heavy rain developing near the PA-MD line and across the mountains. A Flood Watch is up through this afternoon for Garrett, western Allegany, and Mineral Counties, where repeated rounds of heavy rain over damp ground could cause some flooding issues. Some heavy rain is possible across the rest of the DMV, but flooding is less of a concern. Scattered rain and storms will drop south through the late morning and early afternoon, and there’s enough juice behind this front for the chance of a few severe storms. The southern half of the region is under a Level 2/5 Risk for severe weather, with gusty winds being the main concern.

Most of the rain and storms will already head out by this evening, with only a few showers lingering into the night. High pressure drives the cold front and all of the moisture toward the Carolinas heading into Thursday morning, making it feel more comfortable and finally bringing back some sunshine. It will be a bit breezy at times, but temperatures should still end up in the upper 70s tomorrow. Friday will feel just as comfortable, with even more sunshine expected. A weak disturbance will dive toward the Atlantic Coast over the DMV on Saturday, sparking up a few additional clouds but no rainfall. Once this system clears out, it will get a little cooler, with highs in the lower to middle 70s and lows in the 50s.

After a sunny and beautiful end to the weekend, the early part of next week is a little murky. Some models point toward a continuation of the dry, comfortable weather we had over the weekend, while others show a system developing off the Atlantic Coast and bringing some rain back in. Even if we do see the soggier solution, there would only be isolated to scattered showers around Monday into Tuesday. Right now, we’ve kept the chance for showers in the forecast, but that could change. After this, drier weather and warmer temperatures likely return toward the end of next week.

Have a great Wednesday!
