Man sentenced for shooting off-duty Birmingham officer after 2020 robbery

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – A 22-year-old man has been sentenced in connection to a robbery and shooting of an off-duty police officer which happened when the man was only 16 years old.

On Sunday, January 26, 2020, around 9:20 a.m., John Finke, a narcotics detective with the Birmingham Police Department, was off-duty, working an extra security detail for the Church of the Highlands in the 5600 block of Georgia Road.

According to prior reporting, Jahmari Wright, who was 16 at the time, used a handgun to rob a couple who were walking to attend the Church of the Highlands in Woodlawn. He was accompanied by Chris Burke, who was 25 at the time.

The victims reportedly told Finke about the robbery since he was working security at the church. Prior reporting from January 2020 said Finke observed a vehicle believed to be in the robbery. However, reporting from Wright’s first hearing in March 2020, says Finke found the suspects…
