Two killed after Jeep crashes, catches fire off I-8 in El Cajon

EL CAJON, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — Two people from Chula Vista were killed early Monday morning after a Jeep veered off Interstate 8 in El Cajon, crashed into a tree and caught fire, authorities said.

According to California Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 3:27 a.m. on westbound I-8, west of Second Street.

Investigators say a 25-year-old man was driving a 2023 Jeep Wrangler with a 24-year-old woman riding as a passenger when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle veered off the north side of the roadway and traveled down an embankment.

The Jeep then crashed into a tree and burst into flames, authorities said.

Both the driver and passenger suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel. Officials have not released the identities of the victims at this time…
