1965 Mustang carries family memories in Tulsa’s Route 66 Capital Cruise Parade

TULSA, Okla. – Visit Tulsa says more than 4,500 cars are registered for this weekend’s Route 66 Capital Cruise Parade in Tulsa, but for News On 6 anchor LeAnne Taylor and her family, one vintage Mustang carries decades of memories.

The family’s champagne beige 1965 Ford Mustang fastback has been part of birthdays, road trips, graduations and weddings since Taylor’s father, Jim, bought it new in the fall of 1964.

Car enthusiasts know the vehicle is more than transportation. For Taylor, her children Nick and Rachel, and her stepmother Isla, the Mustang represents a time, a place, and the people. Some are still here, and some have driven off into the sunset.

“This is known as a Champagne Lady,” Isla said. “Jim’s friends always said they could have a picnic lunch on his motor because he kept it so clean.”

Jim and Isla bought the car straight off the production line in San Jose, California. The original sale price was $1,995, but Jim added nearly $2,000 worth of extras. The salesman said it was the longest accessory list he’d ever written up…
