UPDATED: Students from Prince William, Fairfax reach semifinals of National Spelling Bee before being eliminated

Students from Prince William and Fairfax counties reached the semifinals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee before being eliminated in the seventh round Wednesday.

Siya Sampath, a seventh-grader at Haymarket’s Ronald Reagan Middle School, and Laasya Mohan, a fourth-grader at Floris Elementary School in Herndon, wound up tied for 31st among the 247 spellers from across the country that began this week’s bee, at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington.

Sampath, a seventh-grader from Haymarket’s Ronald Reagan Middle School, reached the national bee by virtue of winning the Prince William Regional Spelling Bee in March, sponsored by InsideNoVa. This was her third appearance at the national bee. She also participated in 2023 and 2024, finishing tied for 57th and tied for 60th, respectively…
