More young people are ‘looking for trouble’ downtown, Des Moines police say

DES MOINES, Iowa — Des Moines police are raising the alarm about multiple groups of teenagers and young adults hanging out downtown. Authorities said there have been situations where the groups have been loud late at night and even fired shots.

Sgt. Paul Parizek pointed Local 5 to data from 2024. It showed that between April and July, there were over 3,300 citations, about 700 warnings and over 150 arrests in downtown Des Moines. Parizek said they’re seeing a similar number of issues this year.

From the Pappajohn Sculpture Park to the Des Moines River, police said the groups gather downtown almost every night and it’s been that way ever since the weather started getting warmer…
