Opelousas driver flees checkpoint with kids in car; crashes into ditch after chase across 2 parishes

ST. LANDRY PARISH, La. (NEWS 15) — An Opelousas man was arrested after fleeing a roadside safety checkpoint and leading deputies on a pursuit across two parishes that ended when his vehicle flipped into a ditch in St. Landry Parish with two children inside, according to the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Demarion Savoy, 34, of Opelousas, is charged with aggravated flight, false imprisonment, two counts of cruelty to juveniles, two counts of possession of a firearm by a person convicted of certain felonies, driving under suspension, expired motor vehicle inspection, improper display of temporary registration license plates, aggravated obstruction of a highway of commerce, and failure to maintain required insurance.
