Utah recyclers urge proper disposal of lithium-ion batteries to prevent fires

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — There were a number of fires related to lithium-ion batteries in Utah last year, and it’s no wonder because the batteries are in almost every electronic device.

“You’ve got at least a dozen lithium-ion products probably within a hundred yards of you at any given moment of the day,” Jon Smith with the North Tooele Fire District told 2News in December.

Smith also said batteries need to be recycled and disposed of properly to keep them from causing fires in trash cans, dumpsters and landfills…
