Police talk early suspicions about teen charged with Samantha Humphrey’s death

SCHENECTADY — When 14-year-old Samantha Humphrey vanished on Nov. 25, 2022, Schenectady police quickly focused attention on her then-14-year-old boyfriend.

Police say the teen told police he couldn’t show them text messages he exchanged with Humphrey because he’d wiped all their exchanges and her contact information from his phone. Later, as he retraced the last steps he told police he took with her in Schenectady’s Stockade neighborhood, he grew agitated when officers pressed him on Humphrey’s whereabouts and his mother asked for a lawyer.
