New Gas Pump Scam Uses Screws to Steal Money from Drivers

Additional Coverage:

As fuel prices climb to four-year highs amid geopolitical tensions, drivers across the country are facing a new threat at the gas pump-not just high costs, but clever scams designed to steal their money.

A growing scheme, known as the “Screw Method,” is being reported in states including California, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. Criminals are manipulating gas pumps by tampering with the nozzle cradle, using screws to keep the pump active even after a customer finishes filling their tank and leaves. This allows scammers to continue dispensing fuel while charging the unsuspecting driver’s credit card, often resulting in hundreds of dollars in fraudulent charges before the victim realizes something is amiss.

Unlike traditional pump skimming, where devices steal card information directly, this method doesn’t involve capturing banking data but exploits the pump’s mechanics to rack up extra fuel costs. The FBI reports that fuel pump scams and digital theft collectively cost American consumers over $1 billion each year.

Law enforcement agencies nationwide are sounding the alarm. In Houston, Texas, officials acknowledge the scam hasn’t yet hit locally but are monitoring the trend closely. Harris County Constable Alan Rosen emphasized, “Anytime things become this expensive, the criminal element is going to try to enter the market.”

Other variations of the scam involve fraudsters offering to help drivers pump gas, then swapping the nozzle or keeping the tab open to continue fueling at the victim’s expense-a tactic currently under investigation in Philadelphia.

Authorities recommend drivers stay vigilant by closely watching the pump during transactions, making sure the nozzle is securely latched before leaving, and always requesting a receipt. Checking credit card statements promptly and using tap-to-pay options can also help prevent fraud.

With scams evolving alongside rising fuel prices, motorists are urged to remain cautious and report any suspicious activity at gas stations to local law enforcement.
