‘Benadryl Challenge’ viral trend sends at least 5 kids to ER in San Diego

(FOX 5/KUSI) — Health officials at Rady Children’s Hospital are sounding the alarm about a reemerging viral trend known as the “Benadryl Challenge,” which has sent at least five children to the emergency room in San Diego over the past week.

According to Rady’s, none of the children had to be admitted, but it was still very serious for some.

“So we’re seeing a lot of 16 to 18 year olds, also young adults, 20 to 22. In the past week at Rady Children’s Hospital, we’ve had at least five cases,” said Shahfar Khan, M.D., Board Certified Pediatrician at Rady Children’s Hospital.

According to the Partnership to End Addiction website, the “Benadryl Challenge” is found on social media platforms like TikTok, and it encourages young people to take dangerous amounts of the over-the-counter drug diphenhydramine, which is commonly found in Benadryl…
