May 31, 1875 – The first public library opened in Madison

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – On this day, May 31, 1875, the city of Madison’s first public library opened to the public.

At the time, it was called the Madison Free Library, and it’s grown significantly since its opening day.

At first, the library had one small room in the city hall building before it started offering service at the central library and expanded to eight library branches spread across the city…
