IAAM to Host Third Annual Juneteenth Celebration: J.O.Y. (Juneteenth on the Yard)

The International African American Museum (IAAM) is proud to announce its signature Juneteenth celebration, J.O.Y. | Juneteenth on the Yard, will be taking place on Friday, June 19, from noon to 5 p.m. This annual, multigenerational program serves as a vibrant center for joy, reflection, culture, and community. It also commemorates the powerful turning point in American history when news of emancipation finally reached the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, in 1865.

The museum invites the public to its African Ancestors Memorial Garden for a day of outdoor festivities, music, storytelling, and fellowship. In honor of the holiday, IAAM will also offer complimentary museum admission throughout the day starting at 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., allowing guests to explore the galleries and delve deep into the history of the African American journey.

“J.O.Y. is more than a celebration; it reflects the enduring meaning of Juneteenth itself — the coexistence of remembrance into rejoicing, hardship and liberation,” said Brandon Reid, IAAM’s Public Historian. “Gathered on this sacred ground where countless Africans once entered this country in bondage, we reclaim space through community, culture, and collective expression while honoring the resilience and traditions carried forward across generations. Together, we affirm the power of memory, presence, and celebration to transform a site once tied to displacement into one of reflection, restoration, and belonging.”…
