Despite his contention that he acted in self-defense, a Fort Bragg contractor who represented himself at trial was found guilty of manslaughter recently in the 2024 stabbing death of an off-duty bartender at a Spring Lake-area sports lounge.
Jurors found 36-year-old Sarker Kamrul Hasan guilty in the death of Derek James Frerichs, a 37-year-old Lillington resident. Superior Court Judge Adam Elkins sentenced Hasan to between 5 years, 4 months and 7 years, 5 months in prison.
Fight inside sports bar turned deadly
The verdict came more than two years after Frerichs was fatally stabbed shortly after midnight on April 24, 2024, during an altercation inside Pyrates Sports Bar on Manchester Road. Frerich’s shift had ended, and he was with friends at the time.
