Tybee Island’s newest garden is designed to protect the coast

TYBEE ISLAND , Ga. (WTOC) – The City of Tybee Island has completed a new rain garden at Solomon Park as part of an effort to improve sustainability and stormwater management.

The project was completed in partnership with UGA Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant, Georgia Tech’s CEAR Hub and Thomas & Hutton. The rain garden design was funded through support from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, while the city provided the plants and labor for installation.

City leaders say the rain garden is designed to naturally capture, absorb and filter stormwater runoff before it reaches nearby waterways and marsh systems. By slowing water during heavy rain, the garden helps reduce localized flooding, erosion and pollution entering the coastal ecosystem…
