School Board Approves Selling Closed Elementary Campus to County for $1

The Cumberland County Board of Education’s Auxiliary Services Committee voted 3-1 last Thursday to sell the old Lillian Black Elementary School property to Cumberland County for $1. The full school board will review this matter on June 9.

Greg West, Susan Williams, and Vice Chair Jacquelyn Brown voted yes. Terra Jordan voted no. This decision arrives after almost four years of stalled talks over the shuttered Spring Lake campus.

Lillian Black Elementary School closed in 2022. District officials pointed to mounting problems with the building, including issues with HVAC systems, electrical infrastructure, roofing, and equipment.
