Several Virginia Beach council members push to ban data centers, hyperscale facilities

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Several members of the Virginia Beach City Council said Tuesday they support banning large-scale data centers and hyperscale facilities in the city, citing concerns about land use, infrastructure demands and compatibility with surrounding neighborhoods.

The discussion came during a briefing on data centers and the city’s current zoning regulations. City staff emphasized that no data center projects are currently under consideration in Virginia Beach and that the presentation was intended to provide information and seek guidance on whether additional regulations are needed.
