In Kearny council races, Team Kearny & Doyle-backed slates likely win 2 seats each

In Kearny, the Democratic primary likely ended with split results between two tickets, one backed by Mayor Carol Jean Doyle and the other consisting of sitting councilmen who have called her out over the town’s finances.

The four contested races were mainly between the slates Team Kearny, three incumbents as well as Sarah Bonilla in the 3rd Ward, taking on a ticket of fresh faces backed by Doyle – who also had the support of the local and county Democrats.

In the 1st Ward, Councilman George Zapata of Team Kearny prevailed over his opponents, defeating Kearny Municipal Utilities Authority Executive Director Assistant and Board Secretary Zayda Balcazar.

Zapata got 283 votes to Balcazar’s 183, according to preliminary unofficial election results from the Hudson County Clerk’s Office provided to the respective campaigns…
