Man charged after allegedly bringing gun into Birmingham federal courthouse

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – A man is facing charges after federal agents say he brought a gun inside the Hugo L. Black Courthouse, according to court records.

Court records claim that on Wednesday, June 3, at 12:10 p.m., Court Security Officers assigned to the Hugo L. Black Federal Courthouse saw a man enter the courthouse and pass through the security checkpoint. At that time, the man, now identified as Cordell Lowe, only had a cell phone.

Lowe was seen entering and exiting the courthouse several times, according to court documents. At one point, he brought in a backpack and left it in a chair in the courthouse café.

Court records claim that Court Security Officers discovered the backpack unattended and picked it up. One of the officers found the backpack to be heavy, prompting them to unzip the bag which is when they found what looked to be a gun…
