Birmingham PD says homicides down 50% in 2026, credits crime reduction plan

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBMA) — The Birmingham Police Department reported a significant decline in homicides during the first five months of 2026, citing ongoing public safety initiatives and the continued implementation of its 8-Point Crime Reduction Plan.

According to the department, Birmingham recorded 17 homicides as of June 1, 2026. During the same period in 2025, the city recorded 34 homicides, while 62 homicides were reported by June 1, 2024.
