Free local news and info, in your inbox at 6 a.m. M-F. Boaters willpack the waters off Bayard Point in Clay County on Friday as the annual — and unofficial — “Boater Skip Day” hits the sandbar there.
The event, called the biggest boating party in Northeast Florida, will bring dozens of law enforcement members in boats and in the air to keep an eye on the estimated 10,000 people in a shallow part of the St. Johns River south of Green Cove Springs.
“Our biggest priority is the safety and security of the people attending the event,” Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Ben Ryan said in a statement. “(We expect) anything from heat to medical related and property related issues. We’re here to keep everyone safe, make sure things run smoothly and provide the safest environment possible. It’s also important for event-goers to be kind, courteous and respectful to each other since it gets so busy.”…
