Wrongly convicted men leave prison after decades

After spending nearly 30 years incarcerated, last week three men were exonerated and released from two Pennsylvania prisons, including one in Chester. Jermal Shuler, Marc Brittingham, and Rasheed Turner had been serving mandatory life sentences for the 1997 murder of 73-yearold Essie Thomas of North Philadelphia.

Turner and Shuler were released from SCI Phoenix in Skippack Township on May 26 and the following day Brittingham was released from the SCI facility in Chester.

Chester resident and re-entry advocate Jonathan Abdur-Rahim King was there for Brittingham’s release and said it was a long time coming. King, the executive director of Safe Corridors, has been active for years with the Re-Entry Resource Center seeking to overturn wrongful convictions and reintegrate inmates into the community after release…
