Bacterial contamination prompts swimming advisory at Huntington Beach

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Peninsula Health District issued a swimming advisory for Huntington Beach in Newport News after bacteria levels in the water exceeded state standards, according to health officials.

Samples collected Tuesday, June 2, by the Peninsula Health District showed bacteria levels above the state water quality standard. Health district staff routinely monitor recreational waters during the summer swimming season.

Warning signs have been posted at the beach, advising against swimming. The signs state: “Warning swimmers — bacteria levels do not meet state water quality standards, swimming not advised until further notice.”…
