Speaking out over Wilmington’s plan to close encampment for homeless

Calling the City of Wilmington’s treatment of homeless citizens “inhumane,” a member of City Council rallied support Wednesday for her proposal to delay the June 15th eviction of people who’ve been staying at Christina Park.

The city began directing homeless individuals to sleep at the park over the winter. Residents were notified several weeks ago that they will be required to leave.

“There hasn’t been a clear plan of what happens to individuals not placed yet into housing,” Councilwoman Shané Darby said during a meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee. “I think we have to have a plan: what are appropriate shelters, transitional housing, permanent supportive housing, along with case management, supportive services prior to relocation – and that it’s clearly communicated with reasonable timelines regarding transition progress for the individuals who are residing at the park.”

A resolution introduced by Darby also ask the city to find and direct appropriate financial resources and personnel toward addressing the homelessness issue…
