Sheriff’s office solves 1993 ‘Shafter Jane’ cold case homicide near Nevada-Utah border

ELKO COUNTY, Nev. (ABC4) — More than 30 years ago, an unknown woman was found dead along I-80, 18 miles west of the Nevada-Utah border. Today, the Elko County Sheriff’s Office confirmed her identity and who her killer was.

According to a press release from the Elko County Sheriff’s Office, the unknown woman, called “Shafter Jane” for the location she was found throughout the decades-long investigation, has been identified as Marion H. Alexander.

However, a few months before detectives planned to arrest and charge the suspect in her murder, Roger Lee Durkee, he passed away in late 2025.

The initial investigation

In November 1993, the Elko County Sheriff’s Office responded to a body found near the Shafter exit on the north side of I-80. She was nude, and an autopsy showed she had been shot twice by a “small caliber firearm.”…
