Eugene middle schoolers build and race electric cars at EWEB event

EUGENE, Ore. – More than 100 Lane County middle school students raced electric vehicles they built themselves at the Eugene Water and Electric Board EV Challenge.

The competition featured 63 cars and 141 students who first had their vehicles inspected and judged for design before racing. During the school year, the middle-schoolers learned about energy production, electric vehicles, gearing, aerodynamics and friction.

“One of the most marketable skills they can have in the world right now is creativity and innovation and collaboration,” said Tana Shepard, climate, energy and conservation specialist for EWEB. “And so, this project, its all of those things.”…
