Portage County orchard faces crop loss due to ongoing weather challenges

HIRAM, Ohio — A year of extreme weather is taking a major toll on some of Northeast Ohio’s fruit crops, wiping out entire harvests and sharply reducing yields at a family-owned orchard.

Monroe’s Orchard in Hiram says a combination of late freezes, drought conditions and bitter winter temperatures has significantly damaged several of its fruit crops this growing season. Co-owner Angela Gingerich says the strawberry crop was affected by extended weather issues over the past two years.
