Lower-than-average gas prices found near the lakeshore

HOLLAND, Mich. (WOOD) — Drivers looking for cheaper gas may not have to travel very far.

On Thursday, at least five gas stations in Holland were selling fuel for as low as $3.85 per gallon. Meanwhile, some stations in Grand Rapids were charging $4.49 per gallon, a difference of more than 60 cents, despite the cities being less than 30 miles apart.

For commuters, that gap can make a noticeable difference. Abbey Rancour, an occupational therapy student, drives about 10 hours each week for her fieldwork placement in Grand Ledge. She said rising fuel costs have become a significant expense.

“I can remember in high school where I’d pay like $10, $20, $30 to fill up a tank,” Rancour said. “And now I’m paying $60 to $70 to fill up my tank and I have to do it twice a week, so it’s a lot.”…
