West Michigan may have a chance to view Northern Lights during solar storm

West Michiganders may get another opportunity to spot the northern lights this week as a solar storm moves toward Earth, according to forecasters with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center issued a geomagnetic storm watch after multiple coronal mass ejections (large eruptions of solar material from the sun) were detected earlier this week.

If conditions align, the aurora borealis could become visible further south than normal, including parts of Michigan.

“What’s happened is the sun, from time to time, lets loose,” said Shawn Dahl, service coordinator with NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center. “The beauty side of it, it can spin up the aurora.”…
