Weevils brought in to target ‘mile-a-minute’ invasive weed in Calhoun County

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Environmental officials in West Michigan are putting a new spin on the phrase “fight fire with fire.”

The Barry, Calhoun, Kalamazoo Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area is dealing with an invasive vine referred to as “mile-a-minute weed.” So, their weapon of choice? A “mile-a-minute” weevil to feast on it.

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development recently issued a biocontrol permit to release the weevil in parts of Calhoun County under the oversight of qualified experts…
