Struggling Alabama hospital to close July 1 without Blue Cross deal: ‘True emergency’

The leaders of struggling Jackson Hospital are warning that its closure could be imminent if they don’t receive higher pay from Alabama’s largest insurance company.

Jackson’s board of directors have passed a resolution saying they will authorize closure beginning July 1 if the Montgomery hospital cannot secure higher reimbursement rates from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama. The board set a deadline of June 25 to reach a deal with the insurance company.

“This is not a boy crying wolf,” Jackson’s attorneys said in a court filing on Tuesday. “This is not litigation posturing. This is a true emergency.”…
