Repairs completed on Tijuana wastewater pipeline, though odors may persist

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Officials say emergency repairs to a key wastewater pipeline in Tijuana are now complete, leading to a significant reduction in sewage flows impacting the U.S.-Mexico border region.

The U.S. Boundary and Water Commission (USIBWC) announced Thursday that Mexico has finished repairs on the Tijuana Parallel Gravity Line, a critical piece of infrastructure in the city’s sanitation system.

According to officials, pump stations are now operating at full capacity following the repairs.

As a result, flows in the Tijuana River and surrounding canyon collector system have dropped significantly, easing some cross-border sewage impacts that have affected communities in the southern portion of San Diego County.

The South Bay International Wastewater Treatment Plant continues to capture and treat remaining flows and is returning to normal operations, processing up to 35 million gallons per day, officials reported…
