SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Utah’s Hogle Zoo has welcomed a new porcupine, Briar.
According to a new announcement from Utah’s Hogle Zoo, baby porcupine Briar, also known as a porcupette, was born on May 23, 2026, to porcupines Blackberry and Barton. When Briar was born, he reportedly weighed just under two pounds.
Blackberry and Barton are at Hogle Zoo as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) North American porcupine Species Survival Plan. Briar is also the second porcupette born to Blackberry and Barton, since the porcupine pair gave birth to Blake in April 2025.
Hogle Zoo says Briar will remain with his mother, Blackberry, for at least eight months before he is transferred to another facility. He will be an ambassador for his species, the Zoo says…
