The first Friday of June is known as “National Donut Day,” and today, there are several places across Western New York where you can get a free donut to celebrate.
What Is “National Donut Day”?
Created back in 1938 by the Salvation Army, National Donut Day was observed on the first Friday of June to honor the Donut Lassies of World War One. The Donut Lassies were the women who would serve donuts to soldiers during the war.
Salvation Army volunteers went to France during WW1 and found that baked good where hard to find, so they set up tents to offer donuts to the soldiers, which became a huge hit. They also served up pies and coffee from those tents, but the donuts were the biggest hits, and the volunteers were soon called Donut Girls or Donut Lassies.
