Sonoma County Jury Awards $6 Million In Nonprofit Negligence Lawsuit

A Sonoma County jury has found the Santa Rosa nonprofit Becoming Independent liable for the sexual assault of a developmentally disabled client.

Jurors concluded the organization was negligent in hiring and supervising a caregiver who assaulted a 53-year-old client with the mental capacity of a young child. The jury awarded six-million-dollars in damages, holding the nonprofit responsible for 80 percent of the judgment, totaling about four-point-eight-million-dollars.
