Eight displaced after St. George apartment fire caused by novelty lighter resembling toy gun

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — An apartment fire that displaced eight residents in St. George sparked a crackdown on stores selling illegal novelty lighters designed to look like toys.

According to the St. George Fire Department, firefighters responded to a reported structure fire in the 8000 block of Ned Avenue near Gardere Lane around 2:13 p.m. May 13.

When crews arrived, smoke was found coming from a window and the eaves of a multi-unit apartment building. Firefighters brought the flames under control. SGFD reported that everyone inside the building had evacuated safely, and no injuries were reported…
