SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) released bodycam footage and details surrounding an officer-involved shooting incident in May.
Just after 6:30 p.m. on May 22, SLCPD responded to reports of an individual with a weapon near 150 West Lucy Avenue. According to police, a caller informed dispatch that a man, later identified as 33-year-old Thomas Nelson, was suicidal and had brandished a weapon to a neighbor. The caller informed 911 that Nelson had a handgun in his waistband.

Within three minutes, officers arrived and surrounded the front of the house. Dispatch informed officers just after 6:40 that Nelson had gone inside the home and closed the door.
Additional resources were requested by officers on-scene, who had taken cover behind a truck on the street. An officer there attempted to contact Nelson by phone.
Shortly after, Nelson emerged from the home and dropped the items he was carrying. He pulled a gun out of the waistband area of his pants and officers immediately began ordering him to drop it…
