Tampa CRA expands path to homeownership with down payment assistance in East Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. — For many renters, saving for a down payment remains the biggest obstacle to buying a home. In Tampa, local leaders say targeted assistance programs are helping break down that barrier — especially in historically underserved communities.

The East Tampa Community Redevelopment Area (CRA), which spans roughly 7.5 square miles, is at the center of that effort. Officials say about 66% of the agency’s budget is dedicated to affordable housing, supporting both new development and the preservation of existing homes.
