AUSTIN (KXAN) — Communities will come together this month to honor Juneteenth — a holiday that has origins in Texas.
Juneteenth marks the day when enslaved people in Texas learned of their freedom on June 19, 1865. Roughly 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay and announced that more than 250,000 enslaved people in the state were free.
