Akron’s first Blimp Day takes off over the city’s 24 neighborhoods

Look! Up in the sky! The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co.’s Wingfoot One and Wingfoot Two blimps made their way in leisurely loops as they flew across the City of Akron’s 24 neighborhoods Saturday morning during its first Blimp Day.

Blimp Day is expected to become an annual summer holiday, said Akron Mayor Shammas Malik during his State of the City address in May.

Wingfoot One, housed in Goodyear’s Wingfoot Lake Airship Base in Suffield Township, along with Wingfoot Two, based in Pompano Beach, Florida, circled through each neighborhood as they headed in a counter-clockwise direction over the entire city.

Here’s how to enter the city’s Blimp Day photo contest

As part of Blimp Day, the city announced a photo contest for photos taken during the fly over — here are the rules:

  • Post your photos on Facebook or Instagram. If you don’t have social media or have a private account but still want to be considered, send your photo via email to [email protected] with your information.
  • Make sure to tag the City of Akron — @AkronOhio on Facebook and/or @akronmayormalik on Instagram).
  • Enter by Saturday, June 13.

There will be one grand prize winner, who the city says will receive an Akron prize package with blimp and Akron merchandise…
