Fans experience Belmont Stakes one last time in Saratoga

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The Belmont Stakes brought history and millions of dollars to the Capital Region this week. NEWS10’s Amber Fisher was at the Saratoga Race Course on Saturday and spoke with visitors and local leaders about what the moment meant for Saratoga.

Thousands of people raced through the gates to be a part of a very historic day. The President of the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce, Todd Shimkus, said that the 5-day racing festival generated more than $45 million throughout the region.

He explained, “People are staying in our local hotels. Where they stay is where they spend money. So they’re shopping downtown. They’re shopping throughout the region. They’re going to bars and restaurants, breweries, wineries. And it’s also giving us an opportunity to showcase Saratoga to the world, because the world was watching,”…
