CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – Charlotte-area museumgoers can visit local museums for free or at a reduced cost throughout the summer — and in many cases year-round — through several community access programs.
Weekend ‘Museums on Us’ program
One widely available option is Bank of America’s “Museums on Us” program, which offers free general admission to cardholders during the first full weekend of each month. Participating Charlotte-area museums include:
- Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture
- Mint Museum Randolph
- Mint Museum Uptown
- Bechtler Museum of Modern Art
- Charlotte Museum of History
To receive free admission, visitors must present a Bank of America, Merrill or Bank of America Private Bank credit or debit card along with a photo ID, according to a bank press release.
The program does not cover guest admission, fundraising events, special exhibitions or ticketed experiences. However, cardholders are not the only visitors who can take advantage of free museum access.
Wednesday Night Live: Free admission every week
Several uptown museums participate in Wednesday Night Live, a weekly event series with free general admission 5-9 p.m. The program rotates special events among participating venues, including:
- Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture
- Mint Museum (Uptown and Randolph)
- Bechtler Museum of Modern Art
- Knight Theater
Programming often includes free film screenings, dance performances, artist talks and other community events. More information and schedules are available on each museum’s website.
