State Mails Notices to 130,000 Californians Who May Be Owed Money

LOS ANGELES – About 130,000 Californians are being notified that they may have money waiting for them through the state’s Unclaimed Property Program, and some Southern California residents may be among them, according to the California State Controller’s Office.

State Controller Malia M. Cohen said the letters are being mailed to people identified through a data-matching partnership with the California Franchise Tax Board. The effort allows the state to connect unclaimed property records with existing tax records, then notify potential owners directly.

Recipients will not need to search the state’s unclaimed property database or file a traditional claim, according to the Controller’s Office. Instead, each letter includes a unique claim code that can be used to verify ownership and complete the process online…
