State, federal and city leaders greeted Les Elephants as Wilmington joined the World Cup spotlight

WILMINGTON — Delaware rolled out a formal welcome Sunday for Côte d’Ivoire’s national soccer team, greeting the World Cup-bound squad at the Hotel du Pont as the team began its stay in Wilmington.

Gov. Matt Meyer, U.S. Sen. Chris Coons and Wilmington Mayor John Carney welcomed the players, coaches and officials traveling with the team during a VIP reception in the hotel’s Lower Ballroom Foyer. The event brought together state, federal, city and international officials as Delaware became part of the buildup to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
