TAMPA, Fla. – The Tampa Convention Center has completed a 16-month public art rollout with the installation of its third and final permanent piece.
The initiative wrapped up last week with the addition of When Smoke Rises, a sculpture by artist Kipp Kobayashi featuring a ship mast and smoke designed to evoke local mythology. It joins two other large-scale works installed over the last year and a half: Recurrence, a wave-shaped structure by the art studio Luftwerk that mimics local tides, and Digital Fulminology, an algorithmic light sculpture by Jason Bruges Studio that simulates lightning strikes.
“Each artwork is inspirational and unique,” Tampa Mayor Jane Castor said. “This exceptional facility now welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors and locals alike with iconic art that not just enhances their experience but helps tell the story of Tampa—from the natural resources we rely on, like our waterways, to the myths and legends that are still with us today and have shaped our traditions, like Gasparilla.”…
