AUSTIN, Texas — The New World screwworm (NWS) is creeping its way further into Texas, as the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) reports more cases of infection Monday.
Austin Wildlife Rescue executive director Jules Maron wants to advise everyone to keep an eye for any living animal that may present with maggot infested wounds. It could likely be screwworm and the public is advised to not move the animal or get anywhere near it to prevent further spreading.
“So that means that you know there is potential for any mammal or bird can potentially contract the New World screwworm,” Maron said. “It’s really important that if the public sees wildlife and it is a live animal and it has an open wound and they see maggots present, they should actually call their county biologist.”…
