USDA confirms first New World screwworm case in New Mexico

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The United States Department of Agriculture has confirmed the first New World Screwworm case in New Mexico, according to Rep. Gabe Vasquez.

On Monday afternoon, June 8, Vasquez posted to his X account stating that the screwworm parasite has been found in New Mexico.

The USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service shared additional details on its website about the investigation into the case that was reported in a dog earlier today in Andrews County, Texas.

The veterinarian who reported the case is located in Texas, and the dog resides at a household in New Mexico. Therefore, the location of the case will be reclassified to be the first case detected in New Mexico, officials said…
