Carroll Cos. building equestrian center with hotel, restaurant on 8,000-acre cattle farm in northern Triad

Roy Carroll’s newest business venture includes some aspects that may seem unexpected for the billionaire real estate developer, including raising a herd of Japanese Akaushi beef cattle. However, Carroll said starting his own brand of high-end beef on the 8,000-acre Carrollwood Farms development plays well into his increased focus on operating restaurants in his developments.

Carroll — the founder, president and CEO of Greensboro-based developer The Carroll Cos. — has assembled about 8,000 acres spread between Rockingham County, Stokes County and southern Virginia for the project. He said has already started building what he described as a “best-in-class” equestrian center in addition to raising the cattle and growing organic vegetables.

Carroll said the farm has about 25 cattle already, and one of the cows won second place in a national judging competition. He said the Carroll Cos. is looking to create its own “very high-end” brand of wagyu beef. All of the farm’s cattle are raised without any growth hormones or antibiotics, he added…
