Belmont’s Vision Zero program has been named North Carolina’s 2026 Traffic Safety Program of the Year. City leaders say the honor reflects how quickly the program has taken shape, including more than 20 safety initiatives launched in just 18 months and a $25 million dollar federal grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The program, adopted in 2023, is built around a goal of zero traffic deaths by 2030. It focuses on reducing serious crashes through roadway design changes, enforcement and public education…
